Section Design Modules

Sam logo

The section design modules are the platform on which the Sam system is built. They offer a range of section based functionality where both section definition and results are displayed graphically so that numeric data is more readily understood. When used in combination with the beam and analysis modules the section definition data is passed seamlessly to them, speeding up the design process.

General section properties for any section

Provides a range of graphical tools for the easy definition of section geometry, bar and tendon properties. Contains an international section library for fast definition of standard components.

Provides calculations for section properties including;

  • Cross section area
  • Second moments of area
  • Product moment of inertia
  • Centroid coordinates

all for gross section, transformed section, cracked section and plastic section.

Torsion and Shear properties for any section

Torsion constant "C" using Prandtl's membrane analogy Maximum torsion stress Shear centre, shear area and maximum shear stress

Differential temperature analysis

This module uses differential temperature gradient profiles to calculate relaxing moments and forces and self equilibrating stresses.

Detailed Design

This module uses strain compatibility to calculate the stresses and strains in the section arising from moments applied about the two in-plane axes, and applied axial loads. It also calculates the available bending or axial load resistance. Crack width calculations and shear link design are also available.

Early Thermal Cracking

This module calculates the amount of reinforcement required to control early thermal cracking.
